Description :
Cultural Significance & Ritual FunctionNature Spirit Embodiment: The horizontal plank form evokes a flying creature, representing a powerful nature or bush spirit (Do) that protects the community and its families. Agricultural Festivals: Butterflies emerge in large swarms following the first heavy rains of the dry season, making them a crucial harbinger of spring. Dancers wear these masks during agricultural ceremonies to purify the village and invoke rain, ensuring a prosperous upcoming harvest. Ceremonial Occasions: Beyond farming celebrations, they are actively performed during youth initiation rites to transition young adults into community life, as well as at funerals for respected family elders. The Dance: Performers attach the massive wooden plank over their faces, stabilizing it by gripping a fiber cord on the back with their teeth. Concealed by heavy raffia fringe costumes, dancers execute energetic, acrobatic routines—twirling, swooping, and rotating their bodies to mimic a flying creature.
